Minutes of SWANA Rocky Mountain Chapter Monthly Board of Directors Meeting - Attachment A
SWANA INTERNATIONAL BOARD -
WASTECON MEETING REPORT SEPTEMBER 2006 – CHARLOTTE, NC:
The SWANA International Board of Directors (IB) held their WasteCon meeting in Charlotte September 16th and 17th. The focus of this meeting was SWANA’s training program. A quick recap of SWANA’s overall status includes:
| Good News: |
Items to Work On: |
- SWANA is in best financial health ever
- WasteCon 2006 exceeded all expectations
- Membership at all-time high
- Reserves at all-time high
|
- Junior staff continues to turn over quickly
- Some training courses are overdue for upgrades
- Applied Research Foundation and advocacy efforts need greater promotion
|
- Training Program Expansion:
- As the core of the SWANA organization, the IB has recognized the need to accelerate its training program to include upgrades to its existing inventory of courses (all types of courses across all disciplines). The expansion envisioned is more aggressive than that supported by past budgets. The IB has authorized a multi-pronged funding package including chapter loans, corporate sponsorships and insurance claim dollars from WasteCon 2005, as well as annual operating budget allocations. The goal of this approach is to jump start the expansion in FY07 but develop a sustainable strategy that will support this accelerated program over the long-term. The Colorado chapter will receive an invitation to make a “T-Investment” loan in the near future - the terms are expected to be 5 years at 5% annually (compounded monthly).
- New Colorado IB Director:
- It is time for our chapter to identify a new IB director. This role requires attendance at two board meetings each year - the "mid-year" meeting in June (EOY in Silver Spring, MD) and WasteCon- plus approximately 2 teleconferences. Chapter expenses currently used by LBA in this role can be switched to support a new director. This position should be filled by WasteCon 2007 (October 14-15 in Reno) and should coincide with our annual meeting election. I will be glad to provide additional information to interested candidates.
- New IB Officers (Oct 06 thru Sept 07):
-
- President - Thomas Parker, Senior Project Manager, Camp Dresser & McKee, Inc. (Albuquerque, NM)
- Vice President - Laurie Batchelder Adams, President, LBA Associates, Inc. (Denver, CO)
- Treasurer – Carl Newby, Arlington County General Services Director (VA)
- Secretary - John Hadfield, Executive Director of the Southeastern Public Service Authority (VA)
- Past President - Andy Quigley, Executive Director of the Solid Waste Agency of Lake County (IL)
- WasteCon 2007 - Reno, NV - Week of October 15th
- If the Colorado Chapter is serious about hosting a hospitality hour or sponsoring similar in Reno, I suggest we coordinate with staff to determine the best way to do it sooner rather than later. There are numerous hospitality suites and receptions routinely held, and very little unscheduled times.
- Miscellaneous:
-
- Next Chapter Conference Call – November 15th, 2006 at 2pm EST
- Annual Report - due by 12/31/06 - SWANA Scholarship fund will receive $1000 from Barry Shanoff if 100% of the chapters submit on time
- CEUs are assigned for chapter programs at rate of 0.5-1 CEU per hour - note that higher CEUs are assigned with more information provided by chapter (i.e., try to provide 1-2 sentences about what each session will address)
- Certification & CEUs cert@swana.org; Training learn@swana.org; Membership member@swana.org
