PRESIDENT'S CORNER
by Leonard Butler

Summer 2005

Chapter Activities have been in full swing since the Winter Newsletter.  On February 15, 2005 a luncheon program featured Mr. Mark Walker, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) speaking about “Voluntary Cleanup and Brownfields – A Solid Waste Story”.  As part of a new direction by the Chapter Board, a half-day workshop was presented in Yuma, Colorado on May 10, 2005.  The Chapter partnered with CDPHE and the Great Plains Landfill Operators and Associates.

The presentations from these two programs can be accessed on the Chapter’s web page at www.coloradoswana.org.  The Chapter’s web page is also intended for our member use.  If you have a job announcement or want to query other members about best management practices, please contact John Briest.

As part of our goal this year for “reaching out to train solid waste professionals” work is now underway to prepare for the annual meeting in Glenwood Springs, Colorado on September 15-16, 2005.  Registration details should be out in July 2005 for this event.  The meeting will be highlighted with a tour of the Pitkin County Landfill.  After the tour, all of our other scheduled activities will be at the Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs.

The first day will be capped with a reception and dinner to provide an opportunity for us to network and recognize this year’s “Outstanding Member”.  The second day will be comprised of a technical program on current solid waste topics with vendor exhibits offering the latest services and products for our members.  SWANA continuing education credits will also be available for partial satisfaction of member certification requirements.

Finally, I would like to honor Kip White, a long-standing member of the Colorado Chapter.  Kip was fatally injured while climbing in the Maroon Bells during Memorial Day Weekend.  His contributions through the years to the Chapter have been appreciated and we will miss him and the professionalism he brought to the solid waste community in Colorado.
