On the morning of May 10, 2005 with extra-large coffees in hand, a bunch of us “big city” folks drove east to the small quite town of Yuma to provide a half-day of training for the Northeast Landfill Operators Group. The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) and the Colorado Rocky Mountain SWANA partnered to conduct the solid waste training. Presenters provided the attendees with both current and new solid waste information including managing electronic waste, understanding and interpreting groundwater monitoring data, alternative final cover, and liner and cover construction basics. The insight from the presentations provided additional skills which will allow the participants to apply lessons leaned to everyday landfill operations, and maintain regulatory compliance for their facilities. SWANA and CDPHE welcome other opportunities to provide outreach training. So if your organization is thinking about its solid waste training needs, contact the SWANA board or your state solid waste representative for assistance. As we “big city” folks drove back to Denver we had time to reflect on the training day spent in Yuma. As we approached the City, anxious thoughts of rush hour traffic jams took hold, but knowing how productive the trip had been made it worthwhile.
