2004 COLORADO ROCKY MOUNTAIN SWANA CHAPTER MEETING
by Leonard Butler

Winter 2005

The 2004 Colorado Rocky Mountain SWANA Chapter Meeting held October 7-8, 2004 in Estes Park at the Rocky Mountain Park Holiday Inn.  As expected, the opportunity to take in breath taking mountain views of Colorado’s most popular tourist destination and hear elk bugling made this event the best ever.

There was something for everyone at this meeting.  The activities began the afternoon of October 7 with a tour of solid waste practices in Rocky Mountain National Park.  This tour reviewed bear-proofed containers along with Stephen Gillette’s stirring account of the tragic Lawn Lake Flood.  Upon the tour’s return to the Rocky Mountain Park Holiday Inn, a reception with almost 50 in attendance were treated to a Fall River Banquet of roasted turkey, glazed ham and pumpkin pie.

A full day program on October 8 focused on:

  • Maximizing Bidding Opportunities
  • Material Handling the Difficult wastes
  • Mold; Verb or Noun
  • Methane – Non-explosive Issues
  • Managing a Plan to use Closed Landfills

Ms. Kyle Patterson, Rocky Mountain National Public Information officer presented a nice overview at lunch of the park and many ongoing environmental activities in process or completed for the enjoyment of the visiting public.

After lunch, the annual business meeting convened to elect chapter officers and board members.  The annual meeting concluded in the evening with a banquet at the historic Stanley Hotel where attendees were entertained by a highland bagpiper.
