The Colorado Chapter New Year began on November 1, 2004. The goal selected for 2004-2005 is “Reaching Out to train Solid Waste Professionals”. This year’s emphasis will be on partnering with other groups to provide this training and show that your continued membership has value to you as a solid waste professional. The Program Committee has been asked to plan three activities in 2005 along with the annual meeting. Based on the feedback received at the 2004 annual meeting, we are considering topics to address regulatory updates, small landfill issues, compliance management systems and control of nuisance conditions. If you have some other needs, please call Program Chair Roger Doak at 303-692-3437. The Membership Committee led by Dick Sprague wants to increase our ability to communicate with you. Dick has reviewed how to contact chapter members and found that 113 have e-mail, 16 have fax, but not e-mail; and 3 have only snail mail. If you do not have e-mail or a fax address, help us improve our ability to communicate with you by calling Dick at 303-764-1520 with either an e-mail or fax address. If your e-mail or fax address changes, let Dick know. By maintaining membership addresses up to date, the chapter can also save money on postage when sending periodic newsletters and other announcements. In addition to Program and Membership, there are several other committees working for you. Laurie Batchelder-Adams will be responsible again this year on the Legislative Committee for legislation in Colorado and Washington D.C. The status of pending bills will be available on the chapter’s website at www.coloradoswana.org when legislative sessions begin. John Briest will manage the scholarship and nominating committees this year. Look to additional news on scholarship assistance for training programs this chapter year. Finally, there is an Audit Committee directed by Curt Ahrendsen to monitor the chapter’s treasury and be responsible for financial integrity to our general membership. If you missed the 2004 annual meeting and want the details of presentations given or read minutes from the most recent Board Meeting, go to the chapter’s website. We are pleased with its rollout in 2004 and want to encourage our general membership to access this resource or post notices about upcoming events. If you work in the private sector, consider advertising your firm’s capabilities on the website. Finally, regardless of how many years you have been a member, consider a New Year’s resolution to network with the chapter, obtain a professional certification or maintain a technical competency in 2005.
