Preview of Presentations for the Annual Meeting
by Cathryn Stewart

Summer 2006

Although the program is yet to be finalized, offerings for the Annual Meeting (October 5th & 6th) are falling into place. We are planning the Thursday afternoon tour to include local offerings of a tire shredder, alligators, and solid waste facility. We are planning a "recap" of the tour as part of the Thursday dinner, for folks who cannot arrive in Alamosa in time for the tour. You'll want to come in time for the Thursday dinner and get-together, if you cannot make it in time for the tour.

Friday's sessions will include a thinking globally and thinking "Colorado-ly" keynote talk by our State Geologist, Vince Matthews. He will speak about "China's and India's Ravenous Appetites for Natural Resources - the Impact on Colorado" and on Colorado's solid waste management system. Four track sessions on Friday will cover collection, recycling, and composting; groundwater monitoring; wastes that require special solutions; and regulatory rulemaking update. Within these sessions, we will be interested to hear a talk on waste diversion expense model, single stream collection/recycling, "Don't Plug It In - Turn It In" about handling Freon-containing appliances, landfill gas impacts to groundwater, and more. There will be a focus session when CDPHE can brief us on lessons learned from on-site CDPHE inspections, and provide stakeholder group status reports on groundwater, geotechnical, and financial assurance.

Please make this the year to attend your SWANA Colorado Chapter meeting, and get up-to-speed on the latest solid waste topics covering the region and surrounding states. If this will be your first time, or your Nth time, we welcome your attendance. A special "Thanks!" to those of you who completed our post-meeting survey forms last year, and thereby directed the planning committee based on your suggestions and requirements for pertinent topics.
