The 2005 Colorado Rocky Mountain SWANA Chapter Meeting
by Roger Doak

Winter 2006

The 2005 Colorado Rocky Mountain SWANA Chapter Meeting was held September 15-16, 2005 in Glenwood Springs at the Historic Hotel Colorado. As expected, the opportunity to take in the relaxing warm mineral waters of the world-famous Glenwood Hot Springs Pool and view the golden aspen leaves against the cobalt blue Colorado sky made this event one of the best ever.

There was something for everyone at this meeting. The activities began the afternoon of September 15th with a tour of Pitkin County Solid Waste Center. Chris Hoofnagle, Pitkin County Solid Waste Operations Manager, and staff provided a delicious lunch prior to beginning the tour. This facility has evolved into a true integrated waste management facility. If a waste stream can be reused, recycled or removed, Pitkin County Landfill will do so through its many operations such as: household hazardous waste, materials recovery, composting, aggregate recovery and community drop and swap.

Upon the tour’s return to the Historic Hotel Colorado, a reception and dinner with almost 60 in attendance were treated to Roosevelt’s Wild Frontier Banquet of campfire chicken, medallions of elk, rainbow trout and fresh whipped cream with Hotel Colorado short cake and fruit.

A full day program on September 16th focused on:

  1. Environmental Monitoring
  2. Commercial and Institutional Recycling
  3. Urbanization Impacts on Landfill Operations
  4. Integrated Waste Management
  5. Transportation Operations: Vehicle Maintenance, Hauling and Safety

Garfield County Commissioner and Western Historian Mr. John Martin, dressed in his western regalia, presented a historic and entertaining story on the early days of Glenwood Springs. After lunch, the annual business meeting convened to elect chapter officers and board members. The annual meeting concluded in the late afternoon and for the folks that stayed several were rewarded with fabulous door prizes.
