Course Outline:

The 1 -day safety course will kick off in the classroom at the conference center. The following topics will be presented and discussed throughout the morning training session:

  • Solid waste industry safety update

  • Review and discuss current safety data from Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) and Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA)

  • Breaking out of the top 10 deadliest industries

  • Roundtable discussion regarding prevalent safety issues and proven solutions for our industry

  • How to develop an effective and comprehensive safety program

  • Discussion on how to develop a training program that ensures compliance with solid waste regulations and an Engineering Design and Operations Plan (EDOP)

Upon conclusion of the tour the following topics will be addressed during periods of observation and discussion and hands-on exercises:

  •  ·         Maintaining control of tipping area

  • ·         Interacting with customers

  • ·         Signs and Delineation

  • ·         Utilizing Spotters

  • ·         Tipping area orientation and optimized dimensions

  • ·         Optimized pushing and compacting

  • ·         Separating commercial and public customers

  • ·         Interaction between people and machines/vehicles

  • ·         Tipping patterns

  • ·         Safe waste screening practices

  • ·         Equipment/vehicle blind spot awareness

  • ·         Preventing slips, trips, and falls

The field training will occur at an active landfill, please wear close toe footwear, bring a high visibility safety vest and dress appropriately for current weather conditions.
